About Zuni Café

Since 1979, Zuni Café has been a cornerstone of San Francisco's culinary identity, embodying the California Mediterranean ethos that marries French technique with Italian sensibility and impeccable seasonal sourcing. The legendary wood-fired brick oven produces the city's most iconic roast chicken, while the copper-topped bar and art-filled dining room hum with the energy of regulars who've been coming for decades alongside first-timers making the pilgrimage. This is neighborhood bistro cooking elevated to an art form—unfussy, ingredient-driven, and deeply satisfying—where every dish reflects a commitment to proper technique and California's best provisions.

Good to know

Order the roast chicken at least 45 minutes before you want to eat—it's cooked to order in the wood-fired oven and cannot be rushed, but the wait is built into the leisurely Zuni experience.

The chef

Anne Alvero

Current Executive Chef Anne Alvero carries forward the legacy established by the late Judy Rodgers, who transformed Zuni into a culinary landmark after training at Chez Panisse and working alongside Gilbert Pilgram, another Chez Panisse alumnus. Rodgers' Mediterranean-inspired California cooking—rooted in impeccable sourcing, wood-fired technique, and restrained but precise seasoning—became the template for an entire generation of Bay Area chefs. The kitchen continues to honor that philosophy today, maintaining the exacting standards and ingredient-first approach that made Zuni an institution while allowing the seasons and California's exceptional produce to guide the menu.
