Valencia, Spain · El Pla del Real
An expert assessment built on data, context and gastronomic judgement.
Enrique Medina and his wife Yvonne Arcidiacono have built Apicius into a Valencia landmark since 2007, where modern Mediterranean cuisine meets a distinctly vegetable-forward philosophy—roughly 70% of ingredients come from the huerta. The kitchen delivers signature tasting menus that shift with the seasons, spotlighting everything from wild mushrooms to local truffles, while the dining room maintains an elegant, unhurried atmosphere that feels refreshingly grounded. With two Repsol Soles and a devoted local following, this husband-and-wife operation has earned its reputation through consistency, creativity, and a genuine commitment to the region's produce.
Book the full tasting menu rather than à la carte—Medina's vision is best experienced across multiple courses where the vegetable-forward philosophy and seasonal focus truly shine.
Enrique Medina trained at the Higher School of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona before cutting his teeth at El Bulli in Seville and La Sucursal in Valencia. He spent time at the Relais & Châteaux property Gran Hotel Son Net in Palma de Mallorca, absorbing the discipline of luxury hospitality. His cooking philosophy centers on seasonal, local ingredients with a pronounced emphasis on vegetables, building menus that shift with the market and celebrate the extraordinary produce of Valencia's huerta. Since opening Apicius in 2007 with his wife Yvonne, Medina has quietly established a signature Mediterranean style that balances creativity with respect for ingredient integrity.
Four dimensions, each assessed independently against the same criteria everywhere we rate.
Medina's cooking is precise and vegetable-centric, building dishes around the seasonal bounty of Valencia's huerta with technique that honors rather than obscures the produce. Standouts like the Titania del Cabanyal—balancing rich tuna against sweet tomato and pepper—and the rock octopus with artichoke show a kitchen that understands restraint and flavor balance. The gamba blanca de Cullera appears frequently, treated with the respect this prized local ingredient deserves.
The dining room is minimalist and elegant, with warm wood floors and well-spaced tables that create a tranquil, sophisticated atmosphere even when fully booked. The glass-fronted wine cellar at the entrance adds a contemporary touch without feeling showy. Expect a calm, unhurried pace that suits the thoughtful progression of tasting menus—this isn't a scene for quick dinners or boisterous groups.
Yvonne Arcidiacono leads the front of house with the kind of attentive, personalized service that comes from years of genuine hospitality experience. Her explanations of each dish are detailed and educational without feeling rehearsed, and the team respects pacing beautifully, never rushing tables. The service style is warm and professional, striking that rare balance between formal and approachable.
Located in El Pla del Real, just outside the city center on Carrer d'Èol, the restaurant occupies a contemporary, understated space with clean lines and natural materials. The wood-toned interior and modern aesthetic feel grown-up and refined without crossing into stuffiness. The climate-controlled wine display near the entrance signals the seriousness of the program from the moment you walk in.
These four dimensions are a handful of the attributes we review. The Insider Rating also draws on research the compass does not display — among them the wine programme, the size and quality of the cellar, the location, and how long the house has operated. It is not an average of the scores above.
