An expert assessment built on data, context and gastronomic judgement.
Lurra brings the primal soul of Basque country to Marylebone through live-fire cooking that's all smoke, char, and precision. Since opening in 2015, this intimate grill house has built a devoted following for its Galician aged beef and whole grilled turbot, cooked over traditional charcoal and wood flames that perfume the surrounding streets. The kitchen balances rustic Basque tradition with London refinement, drawing on head chef Damian Surowiec's experience at Barrafina and Salt Yard to deliver fire-led cooking that's both primal and polished.
Order multiple starters and share rather than going straight for a large steak—the quality is consistent across the board, and you'll get a better sense of the kitchen's range.
Damian Surowiec honed his craft in two of London's most respected Spanish kitfires—Barrafina and Salt Yard—before taking the helm at Lurra. His training in those kitchens instilled a reverence for ingredient integrity and the kind of technical precision that makes simple grilling look effortless. At Lurra, Surowiec channels traditional Basque techniques through charcoal and wood-fire cooking, emphasizing proper sourcing of Galician beef and seasonal seafood while letting smoke and flame do the talking. His philosophy centers on respecting the product and the fire, with minimal interference between raw ingredient and finished plate.
Four dimensions, each assessed independently against the same criteria everywhere we rate.
The grill is the star here, and it shows in every dish that touches the flames—octopus emerges tender and smoky, pluma ibérica achieves perfect caramelization, and the Galician ribeye (including 100-day aged cuts) delivers deep, funky complexity that only proper aging can achieve. Starters like bone marrow on sourdough and jamón ibérico set the tone, though seasoning can lean restrained in true northern Spanish fashion. The Basque cheesecake is the inevitable and correct way to finish.
The atmosphere is cosy and buzzing, with the scent of wood smoke and charring meat announcing itself before you even walk through the door. The dining room hums with energy, particularly when full, though tables near the back door can catch a draft when it's open. Expect a lively, informal setting that feels more neighborhood grill than white-tablecloth affair—ideal for groups or relaxed date nights.
Service has its peaks and valleys—when the team is on, they're warm and knowledgeable, guiding you through the menu with genuine enthusiasm. On busier nights, pacing can slow and attention can feel stretched, with waits between courses stretching longer than ideal. The staff knows their product well, particularly when it comes to the aged beef cuts and wine pairings from the Spanish-focused list.
The interior is warm and intimate, with exposed brick, wooden tables, and an open kitchen where flames lick the grill grates in full view. Located just off Marble Arch on Seymour Place, it's a cosy neighborhood spot that punches above its modest footprint. The design leans rustic-modern Basque, with enough smoke and theater from the grill to keep the visual interest high throughout the meal.
These four dimensions are a handful of the attributes we review. The Insider Rating also draws on research the compass does not display — among them the wine programme, the size and quality of the cellar, the location, and how long the house has operated. It is not an average of the scores above.
