An expert assessment built on data, context and gastronomic judgement.
EMA Espresso Bar has become a cornerstone of Prague's specialty coffee culture since opening in 2013, anchored by its in-house Alf & Bet roastery and a rotating cast of guest micro-roasters from across Europe. Set within a striking 1930s Czech functionalist building on Na Florenci, this is a café where quality trumps convenience—no disposables since April 2024, no Wi-Fi to distract from the ritual, just impeccably pulled espresso and pastries that could stand alongside any serious European bakery. The communal Saturday breakfasts and the buzzing central table make it as much a social hub as a coffee temple, drawing everyone from local creatives to visiting coffee geeks who know their single-origin from their blends.
Come right at opening on a weekday to snag a window seat before the morning rush—by mid-morning, every spot is spoken for.
Four dimensions, each assessed independently against the same criteria everywhere we rate.
The in-house bakery delivers seriously good Danish pastries and sandwiches built on proper foundations—think house-baked bread with fillings like chorizo or salami that show real thought beyond assembly-line café fare. The asparagus Danish has earned a following for good reason, balancing richness with vegetable brightness, while the cortados and flat whites showcase beans roasted with precision, often highlighting bright, citrus-forward profiles that speak to meticulous sourcing and roasting.
This is a high-energy, communal space where the giant central table and window-counter seating foster a sense of collective ritual rather than laptop isolation. Expect a buzzing crowd from early morning through afternoon—it fills fast and stays full, with a mix of locals catching up over cortados and travelers who've done their homework. The no-Wi-Fi policy is deliberate, keeping the focus on conversation and coffee rather than screens, which gives the place a rare, present-tense energy.
The multilingual baristas know their beans inside out and take genuine pleasure in guiding you through the menu, whether you're curious about the guest roaster or want advice on brew method. Service is efficient and informed without being precious—orders come quickly, food is brought to your table, and there's a palpable sense that the team believes in what they're pouring. The reusable-cup-only policy means you'll need to bring your own or borrow one with a deposit, a commitment that signals serious intent about sustainability.
The Scandinavian-meets-Czech-functionalist aesthetic gives EMA a clean, architectural backbone—high ceilings, abundant natural light, and a stripped-back palette that lets the coffee and the crowd take center stage. The Na Florenci location sits conveniently across from the train station and near the metro, making it an easy first or last stop, though ongoing construction in the area can shift the immediate streetscape. Inside, the mix of communal tables, window perches, and a cozy nook at the bottom of the stairs offers different moods within one space, with outdoor seating adding seasonal breathing room.
These four dimensions are a handful of the attributes we review. The Insider Rating also draws on research the compass does not display — among them the wine programme, the size and quality of the cellar, the location, and how long the house has operated. It is not an average of the scores above.
