Barcelona, Spain · Eixample
An expert assessment built on data, context and gastronomic judgement.
Compartir Barcelona brings the culinary vision of the Disfrutar trio—Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, and Mateu Casañas—to the Eixample, channeling their El Bulli pedigree into a more accessible, convivial format than their three-Michelin-starred flagship. Under the kitchen leadership of Nil Dulcet, who honed his craft at Compartir Cadaqués, the restaurant reimagines traditional Catalan tapas as elegant sharing plates that balance technical prowess with warmth and spontaneity. The concept, inspired by the coastal charm of Cadaqués but rendered with urban sophistication, invites diners to gather around the table and share plates that respect tradition while pushing creative boundaries.
Order multiple rounds of the oysters—they're the dish that keeps tables coming back, and the kitchen's treatment of them is genuinely exceptional.
Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, and Mateu Casañas met in the legendary brigade at El Bulli under Ferran Adrià, where they absorbed the avant-garde techniques and creative philosophy that would define their careers. After El Bulli's closure, the trio opened Compartir in Cadaqués before launching Disfrutar in Barcelona, which has earned them three Michelin stars and global recognition. At Compartir Barcelona, they've entrusted the kitchen to Nil Dulcet, who came up through Compartir Cadaqués and served as the first head chef at Disfrutar, bringing the same technical rigor and playful approach to this more convivial, sharing-focused concept. The philosophy remains rooted in Catalan terroir, seasonal sourcing, and the belief that elevated cuisine should foster connection around the table.
Four dimensions, each assessed independently against the same criteria everywhere we rate.
The kitchen delivers modern Catalan cooking with a playful, sharing-focused sensibility—think sardines prepared with precision, tuna cannelloni that regulars order reflexively, and oysters that have built a devoted following for their pristine quality and creative accompaniments. Dulcet's brigade demonstrates solid mise en place and thoughtful flavor balance, though some dishes can veer toward complexity where restraint might serve better. The carpaccio and razor clams showcase exceptional sourcing, while the paella—though competent—doesn't always match the heights of the more inventive preparations.
The dining room strikes a balance between relaxed conviviality and refined elegance, filling steadily after the 7:30 opening with a crowd that appreciates elevated technique without formality. The Cadaqués-inspired design lends coastal lightness to an urban Eixample setting, creating a spacious, stylish backdrop that encourages lingering over multiple rounds of plates. Expect a lively but not boisterous energy as the evening unfolds, with tables engaged in the communal ritual of sharing.
The front-of-house team, including sommelier Raquel, brings genuine warmth and attentiveness to the floor, guiding diners through portion sizing and wine pairings with confidence. Service flows with professional precision, though the greeting at the door can occasionally feel guarded until reservations are confirmed. The brigade excels at explaining each dish and timing courses to the rhythm of the table, making the sharing experience feel orchestrated rather than chaotic.
The interior channels coastal Cadaqués with a contemporary, urban edge, offering a spacious and elegant environment that feels both cozy and polished. The design avoids preciousness, opting instead for a refined yet unpretentious aesthetic that complements the sharing-plate philosophy. Located on Carrer de València in the heart of Eixample, the restaurant benefits from accessibility while maintaining an atmosphere of culinary intention.
These four dimensions are a handful of the attributes we review. The Insider Rating also draws on research the compass does not display — among them the wine programme, the size and quality of the cellar, the location, and how long the house has operated. It is not an average of the scores above.
